Lake Varna is located west of the eponymous city. People have lived around the lake since prehistoric times. The Chalcolithic necropolis discovered in 1972 serves as powerful evidence of their activity. Thousands of gold artifacts have been discovered at the site. These objects are the world's oldest processed gold artifacts, dating from 4600 BC to 4200 BC. Scientists define these artifacts as belonging to a flourishing early civilization with pre-state organization. This treasure is one of Varna's iconic landmarks.
